Photodynamic Therapy for Jefferson Park, Peekskill, Yorktown Heights, Mahopac, and White Plains, New York

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) goes a step past Isolaz™ and Omnilux™. It uses a photo (light) sensitizing substance applied to the skin with an application prior to either IPL or other light exposure. The duration of exposure and the intensity of the light determines the degree of the skins reaction to the treatment. The photosensitizer is aminolevulinic acid (ALA), a natural substance found throughout the body and a precursor to hemoglobin synthesis. When localized to the targeted area, ALA is converted to another substance, protoporphyrin IX which is activated by light to produce oxygen bound substances that destroy target tissue skin cells. In dermatology, PDT is successfully used to treat actinic (solar) keratoses and superficial basal cell carcinoma.

In cosmetic dermatology, ALA-PDT removes sun damaged, pre-cancerous cells while improving fine wrinkles and pigmented spots. It has also been found to minimize pores and reduce oil glands. Isolaz blue spectrum light kills the p. acne bacteria in cystic acne and acne rosacea and can reduce acne scars. PDT photorejuvenation results are similar to three to five IPL treatments, but there is a caution flag with using light sensitizing substances. The recipient of an ALA photodynamic session must be willing to avoid direct sunlight and bright indoor light for two to three days after treatment. This prevents a more exuberant, albeit temporary, reaction that can keep you home for several days with a reddened face. When this warning is followed, the beneficial effect of PDT can be dramatic.
