Laser Hair Removal

Hair in unwanted places has been a serious hardship for men and women for many years. Current fashion is more revealing than in decades past, while attractiveness is at a premium. Facial hair on a woman can have a devastating effect on self-confidence. Razor bumps and rashes on shaved areas are unsightly and irritating. Now there is a solution. Laser light can penetrate the skin to varying depths, depending on the type of laser. The skin depth of a hair follicle is reached by a laser in the 800 nm range. New Horizons has the workhorse of hair removal/reduction lasers, the Lumenis Lightsheer Diode Laser. It’s light preferentially heats the melanin in the actively growing hair follicle, permanently preventing that hair follicle from performing its function, hair growth. Because about half of hair follicles are in a less vulnerable resting phase, several treatments are needed. The results are usually dramatic, especially for darker hair on light colored skin. Treatment time varies from 15 minutes to two hours, depending on the area treated. Although the laser tip is cooled, the snapping feeling against the skin can be uncomfortable. Since everyone’s discomfort tolerance is different, numbing skin gels are available to anyone needing them. There will be post treatment redness that may be gone by the time you leave the office but can last for several hours.
